What Does a Cedar Roof Need?

Why do some cedar roofs look beautiful for many years while others curl and split early? Mostly, it comes down to how they were installed and how well they can dry. Cedar is natural wood. Rain makes it fatten and sun makes it shrink, which is why every shake needs a sliver of open space beside it. It needs a breathable layer below and air moving beneath it so moisture can leave after a rain. In shady spots, it needs even more help. When those needs are not met, the wood cups, splits and grows moss. So what do we look at? Cracked and curled shakes, green or mossy patches, soft areas underfoot, worn metal in valleys and along walls and the slopes that never seem to dry. Then we answer the big question honestly: can this roof be repaired, or has it reached the end? Sometimes replacing a section and renewing the metal is enough. Sometimes it is not. If we install new cedar, every shake is spaced and fastened correctly, the metal is new and the peak is vented. And if another material would suit your home better, we will gently say so.
